Our Curriculum
At Pear Tree Infant and Nursery School, our curriculum is ambitious, carefully sequenced and designed to meet the needs of every child. Leaders ensure that learning is securely rooted in the EYFS statutory framework and the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1, with clear progression from Nursery through to Year 2.
Our curriculum identifies the essential knowledge, vocabulary and skills children need to develop within each subject. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build on what they already know, remember more and develop increasing confidence and independence.
Leaders regularly review the curriculum to ensure that it is coherent, inclusive and purposeful, enabling all children, including those who may need additional support, to access ambitious learning and achieve well.

Curriculum Overview
What will your child learn each day?
At Pear Tree Infant and Nursery School, we provide a fun, engaging and ambitious curriculum that inspires children to be curious, confident and enthusiastic learners.
You can find out more about what your child will learn throughout the year by exploring the curriculum documents below.
If you have any questions about our curriculum, how we teach and support your child, or how you can continue learning at home, please contact Mrs B Suddhi, Headteacher. We are always happy to work in partnership with you.
In nursery and reception, children learn through purposeful play, exploration and deep-level learning. Our carefully planned provision provides stimulating and challenging experiences that encourage children to develop their independence, knowledge, skills, confidence and resilience.
Our leaders are passionate about ensuring that every child is well-prepared for the next stage of their learning. In Reception, our curriculum builds carefully on children's experiences and prior learning, with a gradual progression towards increasingly structured and formal learning as the year develops.
Children continue to benefit from high-quality play and exploration, alongside increasingly purposeful adult-led learning. Early reading, writing and mathematical development are central foundations, with children developing the knowledge, vocabulary, skills and confidence they need to become successful learners.
As the year progresses, children are supported to sustain their attention, listen carefully, work with increasing independence and apply what they have learnt. This carefully considered balance ensures that children are secure in the Early Years while developing the readiness, knowledge and learning behaviours needed for a successful transition into Key Stage 1.
At Pear Tree Infant and Nursery School, we are passionate about developing a love of reading from the very beginning. Our approach to early reading begins in Nursery and develops progressively through Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, ensuring that children build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to become successful, enthusiastic readers.
We provide high-quality, systematic teaching of phonics through the validated Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) programme. Learning is carefully sequenced so that children build securely on what they already know, developing their phonemic awareness, phonics knowledge, blending and segmenting skills as they progress through school.
Alongside phonics, children experience a rich reading curriculum, with regular opportunities to listen to and enjoy high-quality texts, develop vocabulary, build comprehension and talk about what they have read. Our aim is for every child to become a confident, fluent and motivated reader who develops a lifelong love of books and reading.

We provide children with carefully selected reading books containing decodable and common exception words, enabling them to apply their phonics knowledge and develop increasing independence as readers. Teachers ensure that books are carefully matched to the sequence of sounds children are currently learning, so that children can practise and experience success.
We really value the important role that parents and carers play in developing confident, enthusiastic readers. Children should read their school reading book at home regularly, with an adult supporting, encouraging and celebrating their reading.
To help us make sure that children have consistent access to the right books and can share their reading experiences with their teachers, we ask that reading books are brought to and from school every day. This small routine makes a big difference and helps us to work together effectively to support every child's reading journey.
Every book shared at home is another opportunity to practise, grow in confidence and develop a love of reading.
Phonics Reading Schemes
To allow children a range of reading texts we offer books from the following phonics reading schemes.
