Diwali Celebrations

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs all over the world. It is traditionally known as the "Festival of Light”. Diya’s and candles are lit to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

For Hindus, the story of Rama and Sita, which is found in the Hindu holy book, the Ramayana is retold. Prince Rama's triumphant return to the city of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and after a heroic rescue of his wife Sita, an incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi, who had been kidnapped by the rival king Ravana.

For Sikhs, Diwali has special significance. It is the day that the 6th Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji and 52 other princes with him, were released from prison. In Sikhi, this festival is known as Bandi Chhor Divas (Prisoner Release Day).
